Cotton cycling caps’ shortcomings are cruelly exposed in the hard slog of a triathlon. They may be great for keeping the sun out of your eyes, but, often covering your head with sweat, they hardly help you make smooth progress.

They were due for a thorough revamp – and ASSOS has stepped up to the challenge.

Its new version of this classic features breathable mesh side panels which let air circulate around your head, even under your helmet. Here it’s offered in black, the dark colour giving excellent insulation against both heat and cold.

The half-moon structure is designed for comfort, with minimal seams to get in the way, while the terry towelling lining absorbs the sweat before it can hamper your vision or your progress.

It fits snugly too, thanks to the elastic in the back panel, so you keep a clear view of the road ahead.
